Rediscovering Algarve
Why Algarve?
This golden slice of southern Portugal is synonymous with beach life. Nestled along the Atlantic coastline, the Algarve offers an enticing blend of natural beauty, cultural richness and opulent experiences, making it the perfect destination for those who crave a taste of the good life while travelling with little ones in tow. Culture enthusiasts will love charming towns like Tavira or Olhão. Olhão has a strong fishing heritage, and its historic town center is built around a traditional fishing port. Visitors can witness the daily hustle and bustle of local fishermen as they unload their catch of the day. Olhão is also famous for its distinctive architecture known as "cubic houses" or "cubo houses." These white-washed, flat-roofed buildings with colorful decorative features are a unique architectural style found in town. They create a visually striking and vibrant atmosphere. Olhão serves as a gateway to the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a UNESCO-designated wetland area known for its unique ecosystem. The park consists of lagoons, marshes, and a diverse range of wildlife, including various bird species. Visitors can take boat tours from Olhão to explore this natural wonder.
Make sure to also visit the eastern part of the Algarve, including Sagres, Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim, known for its quieter shores, natural beauty and opportunities for sporty families including golfing, tennis and a variety of watersports. From there it is only a stone's throw to the Costa Vicentina with its pristine nature and excellent surf spots. If you want to get a glimpse of traditional Portugal make sure to drive on and visit Portugal´s terrific countryside, the Alentejo.
Why is Algarve perfect for families?
Travelling to the Algarve with kids can be a wonderful and memorable experience for several reasons. Bathed in daily sunshine the Algarve boasts some of Europe’s most pristine beaches, where the golden sands seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon, inviting families to unwind and soak up the sun. With hidden coves to huge expanses popular with the surfing set, there’s a beach for every preference. For the most impressive coastal cliffs visit Praia do Camilo, Praia da Marinha or Três Irmãos. The year-round mild climate beckons families to explore the great outdoors. Whether it’s kayaking in hidden caves, hiking along rugged coastal trails, or biking through picturesque countryside, there’s no shortage of activities for adventurous spirits and nature lovers. Exploring nature together can be both fun and educational: Taking a boat tour to spot dolphins in their natural habitat can be an exciting experience for kids, providing an opportunity to learn about marine life. For culture enthusiasts the rich Portuguese heritage comes alive through traditional festivals and local cuisine, which even the pickiest of young eaters will adore. Popular with children: pastries like pastéis de nata and the famous Portuguese custard tarts. The region offers a wide range of family-friendly accommodations, including resorts, boutique hotels, and vacation rentals with amenities and services tailored to families.
