les Terrasses de Comporta in Melides, Portugal

In the middle of nowhere...

… and close to heaven: “Les Terrasses de Comporta” is the perfect holiday rental to enjoy peace, seclusion, and the natural wonders of the Alentejo coast. Designed by renowned Portuguese architect Aires Mateus, and owned by a Parisian couple who travelled the world before selecting the hills of this placid coastal village as the location for the summer home of their dreams, this outstanding property meets the highest architectural standards.

Comporta is the word on everyone’s lips. But those ahead of the curve have found their summer refuge further south. Awaiting you there are the same untouched and pristine beaches as in Comporta. This magical place is called Melides. Just a 15 minute drive from Comporta, Melides is a small and serene community with a large lagoon.
Although designers’ vacation homes dot the banks of the lagoon, Melides is still a place comprised primarily of locals, with a whitewashed church and a market in the centre of the village, where farmers and fishermen sell fresh fish and local vegetables.

Melides is the beloved second home of aforementioned Parisians Evelyne and Claude. “We completed construction in early 2015”, says Evelyne. “We spent two years in Portugal to supervise the building process and to work closely with the architect Manuel Aires Mateus. Our goal was to have an easy-to-run summer house and be able to enjoy it with friends and family in a way that everyone has privacy and independence. The layout and design of the house reflect this objective”.
The design of the house is inspired by traditional Alentejo fishermen’s houses, which usually consist of three or four cabanas with differing purposes. The interpretation here is modern, replacing traditional, less durable reed and wood with natural concrete. The interior is painted chalk white and melds contemporary and vintage styles of furniture. This holiday home is made up of four separate constructions, three of these luxury cabanas are double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, and the fourth is a main house which includes its own double bedroom, an en-suite bathroom next to the living room and a fully equipped kitchen. The main house and bungalows are a lavish 350 square metres in total, with an 18 metres swimming pool.
Each of the three bungalows is made out of benched concrete from floor to ceiling, measures 35 square metres, consists of a double bedroom, and is oriented east-west with an ocean view. Two of the bungalows contain queen beds and one contains two single beds. Each bathroom is fully furnished with shower, loo and two washing basins. The eastern-facing bathroom opens onto a natural cane patio overlooking a manicured lawn and an orchard of olive, orange, lemon, and oak trees. On the western side, a large wooden patio with garden sofa and wicker chairs offers additional private space for relaxation. All bungalows are both heated and air-conditioned and are separated by a garden of Mediterranean flora.
The main house is approximately 15 metres from the nearest bungalow and is also built entirely of benched concrete, with a light wooden floor of Nordic pine. The master bedroom and en-suite bathroom are hewn from white marble. Two glass doors open onto external patios furnished with congenial garden chairs and sofas. One may gaze out at the ocean in comfortable repose. The kitchen of the main house is hung with white lacquered cabinets, is equipped with two ovens (steam and electric), two refrigerators, freezer and dishwasher, all by Miele. In this kitchen one can easily cook for more than 10 people.
Besides the extraordinary architecture, the truly special thing about this holiday estate is its ideal location: 6 km away from the village on the edge of a little row of hills overlooking the gently rolling landscape of the Alentejo. It offers an outstanding view over pine and oak trees, the lagoon and beyond to the ocean. Watching the sunset here is sensational. The house is embedded in a 7 hectares park with a uniquely landscaped garden. There is not a single neighbouring house to disturb the view or the tranquillity of the property.
