Why Zermatt?

Set in a steep valley with the unbeatable backdrop of the towering Matterhorn, the traditional mountain village of Zermatt offers a quintessentially Alpine holiday. The town itself is car-free, which adds to the charm, while a collection of smart shops, restaurants and cafés sit alongside churches and wood-clad houses dating back 500 years.
Add to this a selection of fantastic mountain restaurants, gorgeous Alpine surroundings, and some of the best, snow-sure skiing in Switzerland – including all the way over to Cervinia in Italy – and you’ve found one of Europe’s loveliest mountain destinations. And in summer, the town transforms into an outdoor activity mecca, with paragliding, hiking and biking on offer to suit all levels.

Why is Zermatt perfect for families?

Kids will notice that the Matterhorn looks exactly like a piece of snow-dusted Toblerone, while adults will be reassured by the car-free centre, making this a calm and safe place for a holiday with children. During winter, the mix of broad, gentle slopes and more challenging terrain, including options for off-piste and heli-skiing, makes this an excellent choice for beginners, intermediates and experts, and there is a range of ski schooling options for all ages.
While the children are learning to ski, adults should book in for the legendary mountain restaurants, including Chez Vrony, Findlerhof and Zum See. All are accessible to non-skiers, and popular with hikers in the summer. Speaking of summer, this is when adrenaline activities such as ice climbing and paragliding come to the fore, as well as more gentle activities including hiking, biking and kayaking. Nightlife is a low-key affair in cosy Zermatt throughout the year, with bars such as Papperla Pub catering to a fun, laid-back crowd.
