Travelling the Seychelles with the family
Why Seychelles?
There is so much to love about this archipelago of tropical islands in the Indian Ocean, from talc-soft white-sand beaches washed by clean, turquoise water, to relaxing, luxurious resorts with a breezy barefoot chic vibe. But, unlike other tropical resort destinations, that’s only half the story of a holiday to the Seychelles with children.
Much of the joy of a luxury Seychelles holiday is in exploring and discovering life beyond the beach. Resorts are only rarely festooned on their own private island, making heading out and seeing real Seychellois life hugely enjoyable. There are boat trips to the botanical gardens of Moyenne and nature trails to see rare, endemic wildlife such as giant tortoises. Day excursions might include taking a ferry to local island La Digue, where you can pootle between villages by bicycle, stopping for fresh coconut water, served from fruit stalls straight from the shell, and taking dips at one of the beautiful, palm-lined beaches.
Then there’s the fabulous food, from just-caught grilled seafood to local Creole coconut curries, via the rich variety of tropical fruit served at breakfast – and, of course, delicious sundowner cocktails, best enjoyed while watching the sun sink into the sea.
Why is Seychelles perfect for families?
Although it’s a long-haul flight, the time difference between Europe and the Seychelles is just three hours, making this a far-flung destination that's well worth the travel. Transfers are usually fairly quick, especially if you’re staying on Mahé, the main island. Otherwise, it may be a boat trip or short flight to your resort, depending on where you’re staying.
Once there, families are brilliantly catered for, with most resorts boasting a wide range of facilities, from kids clubs and swimming pools to kayaking and boat trips. Food, too, is generally international, offering lots of choice for picky eaters.
But really, the highlight here is exploring the clear, warm waters, to snorkel over coral reefs rich in marine life, or to try scuba diving (many resorts offer “Discover Scuba” courses for kids). On dry land, families will love discovering the rainforests, spotting everything from emerald-green lizards and fruit bats to colourful birds.
