Mauritius Travel Guide – Luxury Hotels, Beaches & Experience
Why Mauritius?
Mauritius is so much more than a fly-and-flop destination. With its year-round warm climate, the island is an especially tempting escape for some winter sun, but works beautifully in autumn and spring too. Yes, there are the powder-soft beaches, turquoise lagoons and warm Indian Ocean, but venture beyond the coast and Mauritius reveals a surprisingly diverse side. Head south to hike through the lush Black River Gorges National Park, discover the waterfalls and Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel, climb iconic Le Morne Brabant or explore the wilder coastline around Gris Gris. Active travellers are spoilt for choice, with hiking, cycling, sailing, diving, snorkelling, surfing and kitesurfing, as well as some exceptional golf courses – often in spectacular oceanfront settings. And unlike many classic resort islands, Mauritius has a real life beyond the hotel gates: colourful markets and street food in Port Louis, small villages, local restaurants and a fascinating blend of African, Indian, Chinese and European influences. Add excellent hotels, manageable distances and an extraordinary variety of landscapes and experiences, and Mauritius becomes one of those rare destinations where you can do as much – or as little – as you like.
Why is Mauritius perfect for families?
Mauritius is one of our favourite long-haul destinations for families because it combines the feeling of a tropical escape with a surprisingly easy travel experience. The time difference from Central Europe is minimal — just two hours during European summer time and three hours in winter — and direct flights from major European hubs such as Frankfurt, Paris and London make getting there relatively straightforward. Once on the island, distances are manageable, the tourism infrastructure is well developed and families who like a little independence can easily explore by rental car — just remember that driving is on the left. Most importantly, Mauritius works brilliantly with children of all ages. Younger children have calm lagoons, sandy beaches and excellent kids' clubs, while older kids and teenagers can try snorkelling, diving, sailing, SUP, hiking, cycling, golf, surfing and kitesurfing. There are waterfalls, nature reserves, botanical gardens, markets, boat trips and plenty of opportunities to discover the island beyond the resort. Add a reassuringly established tourism infrastructure and an exceptional choice of family-friendly hotels – from relaxed beach resorts to private villas and sophisticated five-star stays – and Mauritius becomes that rare family destination that keeps toddlers, teenagers and parents equally happy.
