Lake Constance
Why Lake Constance?
Calm, white pebble beaches slope gently into one of Europe’s cleanest, deepest lakes – a gorgeous, glassy green expanse that is shared between Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The area is beautifully rural, with sunflower fields and leafy orchards providing perfect cycling routes, while the lake offers a huge range of watersports for summery days. There are numerous pretty villages, with regular festivals taking place during summer and autumn, as well as peninsulas known for their organic produce, while the university town of Konstanz has a picturesque medieval centre, with winding alleys and historical buildings. There’s even the chance of floating over the lake by zeppelin – they were invented in Friedrichshafen by Count Zeppelin in 1900.
Why is Lake Constance perfect for families?
The lake is the focus for lazy summer days, dotted with numerous beaches and all sorts of activities, from windsurfing and kayaking to sailing courses for children. The ferries that criss-cross the lake offer fun excursions – to charming Meersburg, for example, with its huge, medieval castle and historical centre, or to the famous island of Mainau, a beautiful botanical garden with a fantastic adventure playground as well as a petting zoo and butterfly house. The rural areas around the lake are wonderful for cycling, passing through a patchwork of orchards, sunflower fields, through quiet villages and deep forests, to stop for a delicious breakfast at an organic farm with views of the distant Alps, perhaps, or for a sundowner at a lake-front restaurant.
