Indonesia Travel – Bali & the Best Islands to Explore

Why Indonesia?

Indonesia is not one destination, but thousands. Stretching across Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this vast archipelago is made up of more than 17,000 islands — and that extraordinary scale is exactly what makes it so exciting. Bali may be the best-known starting point, with its temples, rice terraces, surf beaches, creative scene and exceptional hotels, but some of Indonesia’s greatest treasures lie beyond Bali. Think Lombok for beautiful beaches, surfing and volcanic landscapes; Flores and the Komodo archipelago for dramatic scenery, sailing, snorkelling and encounters with the legendary Komodo dragons; Java for volcanoes, culture and Borobudur; or remote Raja Ampat for one of the world’s most extraordinary marine environments. Some islands are easily combined with Bali by a short onward flight, while the Riau Islands around Bintan can even be reached by ferry from Singapore — opening up countless possibilities for very different journeys. And the timing works particularly well for European families: across Bali, Java and much of the south, the drier season typically runs from around April to October, making the European summer holidays an excellent time to travel. From surfing and diving to volcano hikes, wildlife, temples, sailing and some of Asia’s most beautiful beaches, Indonesia rewards those who look a little further. The question is not simply where to go, but which Indonesia is right for you.

Why is Indonesia perfect for families?

Indonesia can be an extraordinary destination for families — but more than almost anywhere else, getting the itinerary right matters. With thousands of islands and enormous differences in landscape, infrastructure and accessibility, the perfect trip depends entirely on how your family likes to travel. Bali is an easy introduction, combining excellent family-friendly hotels and private villas with beaches, surfing, temples, rice fields, waterfalls and plenty of activities for children. But for us, the real magic often begins beyond Bali: relaxed Lombok and the Gili Islands for beaches and water adventures, Flores and Komodo for older children with a sense of adventure, or one of the small islands close to Singapore for an easy combination of city and barefoot escape. Lombok, for example, combines beaches, surfing, waterfalls, local Sasak culture and Mount Rinjani, while Gili Air is specifically highlighted by Indonesia’s tourism board as popular with families. Indonesia also offers excellent value at the higher end, particularly when it comes to spacious villas, private pools, personal service and memorable experiences. Families can learn to surf, snorkel with tropical fish, cycle through rice fields, visit temples and villages, spot wildlife, sail between islands or simply slow down on a beautiful beach. The possibilities are almost endless — which is precisely why we carefully choose the right islands, hotels and experiences for each family rather than offering one standard Indonesia itinerary.
