Gotland – Sweden`s Hidden Gem Island

Why Gotland?

Sweden’s largest island sits in the heart of the Baltic Sea, around 90 kilometres off the mainland coast. For Stockholmers, Gotland holds much the same appeal as Bornholm does for Copenhageners: a beloved summer escape where long days unfold between the sea, nature and an effortlessly relaxed way of life. Despite its popularity, the island retains a wonderfully unspoilt feel. Rolling farmland, red wooden cottages, grazing sheep and sleepy fishing villages define much of the landscape, while the UNESCO-listed medieval town of Visby serves as its cultural heart. Encircled by one of Europe’s best-preserved city walls, Visby charms with cobbled lanes, rose-covered cottages and a vibrant café scene. Families are drawn to Gotland’s safe, laid-back atmosphere, manageable distances and gently sloping beaches, while the island’s sunny climate – among the best in Sweden – makes it an ideal destination for active summer holidays with children.

Why is Gotland perfect for families?

Few Scandinavian islands combine nature, beach life and outdoor adventure as effortlessly as Gotland. The long sandy beaches along the east and south coasts offer plenty of space for swimming, paddling and unhurried days by the sea, while the island’s reliable winds – particularly along the west coast and around Tofta and Sudersand – create excellent conditions for kitesurfing, windsurfing and other watersports. Yet Gotland never feels overdeveloped. Instead of large-scale resorts, the island is defined by holiday homes, campsites and small, independently run places to stay. In Visby, children can walk along medieval city walls, wander through rose-filled lanes or delve into the island’s Viking history. Getting there is pleasantly straightforward: ferries run several times a day from Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, and from Oskarshamn on the Swedish mainland to Visby. Families travelling by car from Germany usually combine the crossing with a scenic drive through southern Sweden; alternatively, there are direct flights to Visby, particularly in summer, from Stockholm and other Scandinavian cities.

One of the island’s loveliest addresses is Krusmynta, set just a few kilometres north of Visby. Part herb garden, part restaurant, café, shop and event space, it has become a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Families come for the relaxed atmosphere, sea views and generous outdoor spaces, while summer brings regular concerts and open-air events. It is the perfect place to ease into Gotland’s slow, sunlit rhythm.
