Discover Porto and Portugal´s Green Coast

Why Costa Verde Portugal?

Tucked away in Portugal’s northwest corner, the largely unspoilt Costa Verde (meaning Green Coast) offers an exciting mix of verdant landscapes, charming historic villages and terraced vineyards. There’s Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s oldest and biggest national park, rich in flora and fauna and home to wolves and eagles. There are lots of small picturesque villages, perfect for experiencing local life and friendly hospitality, and the thriving vineyards where you can drink a glass of Vinho Verde, a fresh, slightly sparkling wine typical of the region. Porto and Viana do Castello are nearby, offering a great range of dining options and nightlife.

Travelling south along the coastline towards Porto, you’ll see endless stretches of beach hugging the coastline, just the place to enjoy watersports such as windsurfing, or simply strolling along the sand collecting shells. Considered Lisbon’s “little sister”, Porto is just as lively and has plenty to offer – from fashionable cafés and restaurants, to its historic centre, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996, as well as its world-famous Port wine.

Why is Costa Verde Portugal perfect for families?

There’s plenty to see and do in and around Costa Verde. History lovers should head to Ponte de Lima, a former Roman settlement founded in 1125 and one of the oldest towns in Portugal. A visit to Museu dos Terceiros in the former monastery of Santo António dos Frades is a good draw for both adults and kids. From here, a 30-minute drive to the coast takes you to Praia do Cabedelo beach, a 1 km-long stretch of powdery sand, ideal for children as it’s quieter and less windy. On the other side of the beach and just by the Rio Lima estuary, lies Viana do Castelo, another charming town with an old medieval centre of narrow shop-filled lanes and café-lined plazas surrounded by centuries-old characterful buildings.
