Greece´s Hidden Gem Island: Antiparos

Why Antiparos?

The small, lesser-known sister island to Paros, Antiparos is just a 10-minute ferry ride from its sibling, making it perfect for day trips. But Antiparos also offers a fantastic family holiday destination in itself – an even more relaxed version of laid-back Paros. Here, the atmosphere is a notch calmer, the beaches even more secluded, the landscapes emptier and the villages more pristine. With fewer hotels, a sparse population and no discernible jet-set scene, only celebrities who want to stay firmly below the radar – and families that are in the know – come to stay. As an example, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have a large estate between the villages of Chora and Glypha, while Madonna, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling are said to have holidayed on this tiny Cycladic island. There isn’t a huge amount to do, but that’s the whole appeal: spend the day on your own beach, paddling through turquoise waters, then feast on the freshest seafood and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Why is Antiparos perfect for families?

The island is a peaceful escape from the usual high-season holiday rush. It’s also easy to get around, and the beaches are shallow, calm and safe, making it the perfect family playground. Antiparos is the ideal destination for families who want to wind down and reconnect, where less is more and a beautiful beach, chic accommodation and excellent food is pretty much all you need. Spend lazy days on the fine-sand beaches, padding barefoot to a simple taverna, your toes in the sand, the fish just-caught and delicious. Taking in the sights takes just a few hours, either in a car, scooter or beach buggy, and the only real tourist site of note is the ancient cave complex on Agios Ioannis hill, known for its dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It’s also worth exploring the island’s fragrant interior and taking a stroll through pretty, cobbled Chora, the main village.
