Because, quite simply, it is one of the most magically beautiful places to visit during the European winter. The beaches are the white-sand stuff of dreams, the water is clear, warm and teeming with marine life, and the jungly interiors of the islands offer the perfect shade from the sun. Once you’ve arrived – by thrilling seaplane or speedboat – you’ll discover your luxury beach suite or overwater villa, with direct access to the Indian Ocean, just made for leaping straight into.
Days can be as relaxing or busy as you wish. Stroll along deserted beaches, laze by the infinity pool, head to the spa, and feast on delicious seafood beneath waving palm trees. Or head out onto – and into – that beautiful water, with snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing and watersports.
Then watch the sunset with a cool drink in hand as stars start to prick the night sky…
Warum ist Maldives perfekt für Familien?
The journey of up to 12 hours may seem long, especially with children, but the special mix of relaxation and Robinson Crusoe escape makes it entirely worth it. There is little jetlag, as the time difference is three or four hours ahead of European time. November to April are the best time to visit, with warm days and little rain.
The beaches shelve gently into the sea, making them perfect for young children, and the resorts have well-catered kids’ clubs for when you want some time to yourself. Older children will love exploring their new island home on foot or by bike, while the sea offers endless chances to discover marine life. This is also a chance to try scuba diving for the first time, with Discover Scuba courses organised by most resorts.
One of our favourites is the 5-star Six Senses Laamu resort, where days may start off with views of dolphins leaping about in the sea while you have breakfast. The whole resort has a breezily open, relaxed design, so families feel particularly comfortable here, and the sustainable ethos is impressive. There are surfing lessons, a great kids’ club and the airy Six Senses Spa offers restorative Ayurvedic massages.
Another favourite is Soneva Fushi, on Baa Atoll, a trailblazer in sustainable luxury holidays in the Maldives. With beautiful beach villas and a brilliant kids’ club, the resort has solar power and is working towards zero waste. Beef has been banned from the menu due to its environmental impact, and you won’t find a single plastic bottle on the island.
