CHECK-IN: Experimental Chalet, Verbier, Swiss Alps

Hidden and chic – the ideal mountain getaway for the cool kids

Experience a hip spot that’s still underground. And book yourself into the Experimental Chalet in Verbier. But don´t forget to pack your dancing shoes for party cat nights at the ultra hip bar and discotheque Farm Club. The crazier your outfit, the better.

“Tourists don’t want to be around other tourists,” says Pierre-Charles Cros, as he welcomes guests to his newly opened hotel, the Experimental Chalet in the fashionable Swiss ski resort of Verbier. Step inside and you’ll know exactly what Pierre-Charles means. An in-your-face approach is exactly what this charming Frenchman opted out of with his latest hospitality venture. Instead, he designed a place that is both modern and warm. Classic, yet fancy. And utterly French. The smartly dressed staff greet guests warmly and with a discretion fit for a members-only club.

„We only open in places we love,“ says Pierre-Charles Cros as he sips his cocktail. And you can tell it’s the truth. The classy Valais mountain resort of Verbier is a gem for winter sports enthusiasts, who care more about snow and proper winter sport conditions than champagne parties and shopping in luxury boutiques. Verbier is young and modern, but also exclusive and dignified because of its high price tag.

The interior is Fabrizio Casiraghi, a Milanese designer. The reception desk oozes vintage-inspired elegance – a taupe marble countertop and manifold tasselled room keys, each one hanging in a neat cranberry compartment. The hotel rooms and suites are done in a serene mix of dusty rose, cyan and deep spruce. Touches such as a rotary-style telephone, or an antique coat rack, tip the hat to times-gone-by.

Guests can choose from 39 rooms and suites, some of which include a gorgeous panoramic mountain view. It goes without saying that the Experimental Chalet includes a boutique spa, an exclusive cocktail bar and a charming restaurant. Chef is Gregory Marchand, whose flagship restaurant in Paris, Frenchie, was recently awarded its first Michelin star. The Chalet restaurant offers traditional and fresh Alpine cuisine with local Valais specialties as well as French morsels.

Good to know

The Experimental Chalet is the ideal getaway for spending some fantastic days in one of Europe´s best ski resorts. And the Farm Club, a hipster spot still run by the Berardi brothers who founded it, is a truly legendary place. Through an unassuming door in the lounge, make the descent to the basement of the house to drink and dance the night away. David Bowie and Diana Ross partied there back in the day. Consequently it’s still the perfect place to enjoy a cozy après-ski, an experimental chalet cocktail in hand.
